Martin Butler: Siward's River Song

A short work for solo cello, Siward's River Song is drawn from the music associated with a character in Butler's opera A Better Place. Siward is the ghost of a drowned lighterman, trapped in the past. This is a fantasy growing out of his characteristic lament which is heard a number of times during the opera.
