The 1955 film of 'The Gadfly' is no Soviet epic but rather a romantic history based on the novel by Ethel Voynich and set in fin de siecle Austria. Shostakovich composed the 'Tarantella from The Gadfly' for two pianos with his own son Maxim in mind as partner.
